Types of Veneers

Veneers are one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry treatments. Dental veneers bond to the facial surface of the teeth to conceal imperfections and enhance the smile’s appearance. Veneers address numerous cosmetic blemishes, including dental stains, discoloration, minor misalignment, chips, cracks, and fractures.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are the type of veneer preferred by most of our Staten Island dental patients due to their strength, durability, and appearance. Porcelain veneers are composed of semi-translucent, stain-resistant porcelain material that reflects light like natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of biting and chewing and can last up to 15 years with proper care.

Porcelain veneers offer many advantages that set them apart from other veneers. However, there are a couple of drawbacks to consider. Porcelain veneers are the most costly type of veneer because of the materials used. Additionally, porcelain veneers require the removal of a thin layer of tooth enamel, which makes treatment permanent. If porcelain veneers wear down or are damaged, replacement is necessary to protect the teeth. 

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are very similar to porcelain veneers. Composite veneers require the same treatment procedure as porcelain veneers, which means they are considered permanent restorations. The primary difference is that composite veneers are composed of composite resin (the same material used for tooth-colored fillings). Composite veneers use more affordable materials, so they are less expensive than porcelain veneers. Unfortunately, composite veneers are not as durable. On average, composite veneers last seven years before they require repair or replacement.

Minimal-prep Veneers

Minimal-prep veneers (sometimes called no-prep veneers) are made of a thin porcelain laminate material. Minimal-prep veneers require the removal of less tooth enamel than porcelain or composite veneers. The benefit of this is that minimal-prep veneers treatment is reversible. Should patients choose to have minimal-prep veneers removed, no replacement is necessary. Because they are thinner, minimal-prep veneers are best suited for more minor aesthetic flaws. They also are not as durable as porcelain veneers.

Snap-on Veneers

Snap-on or “instant” veneers are removable pieces that clip onto the teeth to hide cosmetic blemishes. Snap-on veneers are available over-the-counter and are far more affordable than other types of veneers. Snap-on veneers cannot be customized to the extent that professional veneers can. Another disadvantage of snap-on veneers is their temporary nature. Snap-on veneers are not recommended for daily use and are not considered a long-term dental solution.
