Dental Implant Statistics By Alex Hecht on July 24, 2019

An implant-supported dental crown modelPeople who are missing a tooth or multiple teeth may want to consider getting dental implants. These artificial tooth roots can benefit people who are missing one tooth or all of their teeth. Numerous people in Staten Island, NY have come to our practice for dental implants and have been pleased by the results.

Dr. Alex Hecht and Dr. Jason Hecht would like to share some telling statistics about implant dentistry. These numbers should give you a good idea about their effectiveness and popularity. To talk about dental implants, let’s first discuss tooth loss.

Rates of Tooth Loss

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 1 in 5 adults age 65 and older are missing all of their teeth. Let’s break that down into some age brackets.

For people age 65 to 74, roughly 13 percent of people are missing all of their teeth. By the age 75, the rate of complete tooth loss jumps to 26 percent. By contrast, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) estimates that just 3.75 percent of adults age 20 to 64 have no remaining teeth.

Most Common Causes of Tooth Loss

There was an interesting 2012 study conducted at a Brazilian dental clinic, the findings of which were published by the International Journal of Dentistry. It listed the most common reasons for tooth loss and tooth extraction at the practice. The findings were as follows:

  • Cavities/Tooth Decay - 38.4 percent
  • Gum Disease - 32.3 percent
  • Eruption Problems - 6.4 percent
  • Orthodontic Issues - 5.7 percent
  • Prosthetics - 3.6 percent
  • Injury/Trauma - 2.6 percent
  • Occlusal Problems - 1.1. percent
  • Other - 9.9 percent

The numbers from this Brazilian practice are similar to what we see here at Staten Island Aesthetic & Implant Dentist.

In addition to the above, smoking is linked to tooth loss in addition to many other health problems. The CDC notes that people who smoke are twice as likely to develop gum disease as non-smokers. Since gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss, the connection cannot be ignored.

How Common Are Dental Implants?

More common than you may think. According to facts cited in a 2015 Reuters story, roughly 3 million Americans have at least one dental implant in place. Each year, roughly 500,000 more people undergo implant dentistry treatments.

Implant Dentistry Success Rates

The numbers can vary, but a survey by The Journal of Oral Implantology stated that the success rate of implant dentistry treatments is around 98 percent. That is a significant number of people who benefit from getting these artificial tooth roots placed.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

The high success rate of dental implants is likely linked to the many benefits of treatment. These benefits include:

  • Stability better than denture creams and adhesives
  • Ability to eat your favorite foods with confidence
  • Prevents bone loss and gum recession linked to tooth loss
  • Excellent aesthetic outcomes
  • Ability to support crowns, bridges, and dentures
